Forty years of war, recurrent natural disasters, chronic poverty, drought and the COVID-19 pandemic have devastated the people of Afghanistan. The recent escalation in conflict and resulting 14 million people are identified as acute food insecure, including 550,000 who have been displaced by conflict since the beginning of the year.
The country is on the brink of economic collapse. International financial institutions have suspended Afghanistan’s access to funds, the local currency is at an all-time low. Food and fuel prices continue to rise and jobs are disappearing at a rapid pace. According to UNDP, 97% of Afghans could plunge into poverty by mid-2022.
- HOW WE ARE RESPONDING -
We are a right based organization, operating for more than 20 years in Afghanistan in different sectors. Our ability to continue our mission is assisted by our strong local roots, our reputation for impartiality and the generosity of our donors.
We are open for collaboration with other humanitarian organizations and the UN, taking in account our in-country capacity, to be utilised and provide the added value and impact to their humanitarian response. BRD gathers with other diaspora-led organizations, advocating for the urgent delivery of humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan using a transparent and accountable mechanism at the EU and member state level.
- OUR CURRENT PROJECTS -
Community oversight on COVID-19 services
We facilitated the establishment of civil society oversight committees and community monitors, who served as community-Civil Society lead monitoring mechanisms for providing oversight on the delivery of humanitarian assistance and emergency response at the national and provincial level.
We also supported the capacity development of established CSOs oversight committees and selected community monitor training and technical support to identify related initiatives implemented by the agencies, districts and municipalities where these services are delivered and sectors.
120 community monitors
have been trained in Heart, Kabul and Nangarhar provinces.
60 members of the civil society organisations on Community-Based Monitoring, Oversight,
Social Auditing have been trained.
